Education FAQs

Wind Power for Education FAQs

Q: I am a Skystream authorized dealer. How does participation in educational programs help me?
A: Installing Skystream wind systems at schools brings a high level of community visibility to the benefits of wind power. While a Skystream does not provide enough energy to power an entire school facility, the educational aspect of the system is monumental. It is also a community-owned example that shows how an installed system looks, sounds and performs. Aside from the benefits of helping your community, the public relations potential is significant.

Q: Which states are eligible for the Wind Powering America Wind for Schools Program?
A: See this list of eligible states.

Q: How can my school apply for the Wind Powering America Wind for Schools program?
A: Contact your state's Wind Application Center. See a list of contacts.

Q: I am representing a school that is NOT part of the Wind Powering America Program and would like to purchase a turbine. What do I do?
A: You can fill out the Southwest Windpower Special Pricing Application form and we will respond if you qualify for an educational discount. One of our requirements is that the installation be performed or supervised by a Skystream authorized dealer.

Q: I am a school that was referred by a Wind Application Center university to purchase our system. What do I do?
A: Please fax a purchase order on school letterhead to 928-779-1485 or email customerservice@windenergy.com. Please be sure to include a contact name and phone number, a shipping address, a billing address and a complete list of parts you are ordering.

Please note “Wind for Schools” on your order and the contact at the Wind Applications Center you are working with. We should have received prior approval of your school’s participation from your WAC facilitator.

Q: How do I find funding to support my school’s Skystream wind system installation?
A: Often, you can lower the cost of the installation through services provided by utilities and other private organizations that may agree to provide tools, equipment and labor. You also may want to involve students, parents and the larger community in fundraising events for this important cause.

Educational discounts through Southwest Windpower also may apply. Find out if your school qualifies by filling out the Southwest Windpower Special Pricing Application form.

Q: I want my school to be involved, but don’t have the resources for a Skystream system. What can I do?
A: Southwest Windpower also manufactures smaller, off-grid systems. Our Whisper 100, Whisper 200 or AIR Breeze systems may be more affordable and are sized for a renewable energy lab. Educational discounts may apply for these systems. Find out if you qualify by filling out the Southwest Windpower Special Pricing Application form.

Q: Do you sell educational demos?
A: Yes, Southwest Windpower has life-size cutaway versions of the Skystream wind system and the AIR Breeze wind system complete with stands. These non-working units are portable, visual models to help demonstrate how wind works in a classroom setting. Download demo order form here.

Q: How do I start a Wind for Schools program in my state?
A: While funding for the program is limited by state, Wind Powering America welcomes additional states to participate as part of an affiliate projects program. You can learn more at the Wind Powering America website.

Southwest Windpower will honor an educational discount for any school participating in an affiliate project program if they use a Skystream authorized dealer for installation.
